Time with company: 16 months
Prior to joining Barratt my perception of the company was that it was a large national house builder and a leader in the industry. This is proven by achieving their 5 star builder status and numerous other awards.
After graduating with a BA Honours Degree in Architectural Technology I secured a job working as a sustainability consultant for an engineering consultancy. Having chosen to specialise in sustainability I then obtained a distinction in my MSc Degree ‘energy and sustainable building design’. I joined Barratt Developments in 2010 on the graduate programme working for Group Design & Technical in their Sustainability department.
I was attracted to the Company as it has its Corporate Responsibility strategy highly focussed on sustainability. I was keen to work for a company that had a key focus on environmental issues with sustainability being high on the agenda. Sustainability in house building is a complete change of ethos, and as such affects virtually all departments. I am looking forward to working with the sustainability team to take on the new challenges the industry faces as we move ever closer to the government’s target of all new homes to be zero carbon by 2016. The best part of my job is the promotion of sustainability issues, increasing the knowledge in the divisional offices, as well as providing standard solutions and implementing strategies throughout the organisation. No two days are the same.
The Barratt Graduate Programme offers opportunities and progression within the business through both the graduate development modules and interaction with the management teams. Barratt is a great place to work; with my colleagues being friendly and welcoming as well as offering excellent guidance and support. As a relatively new employee this is much appreciated and helps me to not only deliver business wide objectives but to also achieve my individual ambitions.
