Time with company: 20 years
I am a carpenter/joiner by trade and I started with Barratt in the late 1980’s as an Assistant Site Manager as I wanted to become a Site Manager. I am now Head of Construction at our South Wales division and I am responsible for over 30 employees.
The Barratt today, in comparison to 20 years ago is a totally different organisation, with many positive benefits. The reality is if you work hard, you have great opportunities for personal development which is recognised both internally and in the wider construction industry.
I attended the first cohort of Elevations which is our Middle Management leadership programme and it took me outside of my comfort zone, making me think of the bigger picture and the effect that my style of management had on my team. After this I got to attend the Divisional Directors leadership programme called Breaking New Management Ground which was even more challenging. I’ve had feedback from colleagues and managers about how much I have developed personally from this.
At the South Wales division we are working on a number of products with our set of Welsh house types and I am also working on light steel frame construction Housing Association units which meet Welsh DQR and Code 3+ standards which are considered to be a cost-effective method in order to comply with new building codes. Over the years I’ve also worked on high rise schemes in Cardiff Bay where we used different methods of construction such as RC, Steel frame and traditional methods. I would say one of the best parts is receiving commendation from our purchasers in regards to their new homes.
I would recommend Barratt as an employer as they will invest in people providing excellent opportunities to progress and in what’s a very difficult climate; I personally feed a good level of job security
