Time with the Company: 4 years
I am a time served carpenter/joiner and I was self-employed for 12 years before moving into site management. I started as an Assistant Site Manager with David Wilson homes and then progressed to Site Manager. I now work for Barratt East Scotland after the acquisition of David Wilson Homes.
Obviously I love the building part of my job but I enjoy meeting with the clients on site and making their journey as enjoyable as I can, I would say I’m a people person. A typical day for me would be would be the general organising and coordinating the trades and direct employed workers, managing the programme of works and checking materials are on site and called off in time to enable the trades to carry out their works. I also must keep my PDA up to date by entering the completed stages of build, quality check and approve the work which releases payment and this in turn keeps the home builder system up to date so everybody knows exactly where we are on site. NHBC and building control is another very important part of my job where regular stage inspections are carried out by both parties at various stages. The most important part of my role is building relationships and trust with the customers from the very first meeting, from the new home tour to the key handover and move in, and then keeping regular contact to ensure they are satisfied with the purchase of their new home.
I’d recommend Barratt as you have good opportunities to progress in your career. I’ve just finished the Barratt Academy which will hopefully help me to progress to the next level in my career. I have 25 years in the industry (that makes me feel old!) but I’m still learning. I took quite a lot from the academy, managing people skills is not something I had a lot of knowledge on but the most valuable part was the rotations, getting to spend time in the other departments seeing where everybody fits in and how their roles impact on the running of my site.
