Scott Walker - West Midlands
I first got interested in carpentry through my secondary school where I gained a GCSE in woodwork. Before I joined Barratt, I had seen a few of their building sites around where I live. I went to the Barratt website where I found everything I needed to know about the company and the apprenticeship programme. I thought it would suit me perfectly as I didn't have a lot of work experience and I could gain the qualifications I needed by the end of it.
The reality of working at Barratt is enabling me to learn a trade which I can use for life and further my career in the construction industry. I hope to go on to management roles in the future.
The best part of my job is the skills that I am able to learn by working alongside other carpenters. My work colleagues are very supportive and enjoyable to work alongside.
I would definitely recommend Barratt as an employer. From day one I have felt as though I have been part of a team, always having a strong relationship with Site Managers and other colleagues. Barratt have put me through college as part of the scheme. I attend 1 day per week. There are also a number of awards for apprentices to aim towards where you could represent your region and win cash prizes.
During the rest of my apprenticeship I am looking to gain my NVQ Level3 and gain further experience to go onto the next stage, which will hopefully be towards an Assistant Site Manager role.
